Remove Stains and Brighten Whites without Bleach

Me + jug of Clorox = headache & nausea.  We just don’t mix.  But, with four small children, I need something to keep our whites nice and bright and effectively remove stains.  I’ve used Borax for years to clean the toilet, freshen laundry, and deodorize smelly trash cans.  But, I’d never tried it as a “bleaching agent” until recently when my one-year-old daughter ate blueberries while wearing a white shirt with no bib.  Yup, we really live on the edge around here!

I wish I would have thought to take a before picture, but I didn’t even think of it.  You’ll just need to trust me when I say that there were dark purple stains covering the front of this shirt.  It was BAD.

Fill a bucket or the sink about half-full of hot water, dissolve about a cup or so of Borax and a squirt or two of dishsoap, and submerse item of clothing.  Let soak several hours… and wow!  No more stains!  Seriously!  I’ve tried this several times since, and it’s been effective every time.

Thanks for the tip! I’m going to try this.

Does this also work on set-in stains? My shirt went through the dryer and sad to say the stain didn’t come out. Ugh! Thanks for the help!
